Full story on WWW.IGIHE.COM

Who is Mutoni Julie?

Mutoni Julie is a Rwandan woman who was born as a refugee in Uganda. She completed her primary and secondary education there before returning to Rwanda with her family in 1996, where she continued her university studies. Now married with three children, she graduated with a degree in business.

How Did the Idea of Entrepreneurship Come About?

Mutoni began her career working in various positions but eventually decided to pursue her own business ventures. Growing up, she was encouraged by her parents to be self-reliant, contrasting with the notion that girls should wait for a husband to provide for them. This instilled in her a strong work ethic and confidence, leading her to manage an international organization before starting her own company, Multilines International Rwanda.

What Does It Take to Run a Business as a Woman?

Running a business requires dedication, careful planning, and resilience, even with supportive parents or relevant experience. Mutoni emphasizes the need for commitment and a strong focus on one’s goals, as entrepreneurship demands significant effort. She believes it’s crucial for women to take risks, trust themselves, and seek support when needed, as success in business often involves both profits and losses.

How Can More Women Be Encouraged to Start Their Own Businesses?

Rwanda has made strides in empowering women, but there are still few women in leadership roles in business compared to men. Mutoni urges women to embrace self-initiative and foster a culture of collaboration. By helping one another succeed, women can advance collectively, as she has seen women thrive in environments where they support each other.

Does Having a Strong Family Background Affect Success?

While coming from a privileged background can be beneficial, Mutoni believes that individual effort is more critical. She grew up in a modest refugee family and recognizes that many wealthy families have children who struggle with issues like addiction. Success requires hard work and a commitment to instilling values in children.

What Achievements Are You Proud of Since Leading Multilines International?

Since taking over as a shareholder and manager of Multilines International in 2021, Mutoni has expanded the company’s services in customs support and logistics, enhancing business operations and improving employee welfare. She has successfully grown the workforce and established partnerships with international companies.

Is It True That Women with Money Diminish Their Husbands’ Roles?

Mutoni acknowledges that some people hold the belief that a financially successful woman undermines her husband, but she stresses that home responsibilities differ from work responsibilities. A successful partnership involves mutual understanding, where both partners balance their roles effectively.

How Do You Navigate the Challenges of Leadership as a Woman?

Leading diverse teams comes with challenges, including managing different personalities and perspectives. Effective leadership requires strong values, dedication, and long-term strategic thinking.

What Advice Do You Have for Young People, Especially Girls?

Mutoni advises young people to work hard, uphold values of Rwandan womanhood, and pursue education relentlessly. Knowledge is an asset in the job market, and she encourages them to embrace all work opportunities with enthusiasm and dedication.
